Are 11 layers really necessary for Blown film?

Over the tears,manufacturers have come up with blown film lines that can produce up to 1layers,
so far only a few have been installed.
Are 11 layers really necessary or is it like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut?
It' the age old question..."which came first,the chicken,or the egg?'
Are 7/9/11 layer films lines being sold because they are needed for a product,market or economic reason,
or because they are the newest and latest equipment technology?
